1. Clumping Bamboo (Sympodial)

  • Growth: Grows in tight, circular clusters. The roots expand outward slowly.
  • Maintenance: Very low-spread risk—non-invasive.
  • Best For: Small gardens, containers, or landscaping where space is limited.
  • Popular Varieties:
    • Fargesia murielae (Umbrella bamboo) – Cold-hardy, elegant arching stems, great for privacy hedges.
    • Bambusa multiplex – Dense, bushy; often used for hedges or ornamental use.
  • Climate: Prefers cooler climates (e.g., Europe, temperate Asia).

2. Running Bamboo (Monopodial)

  • Growth: Spreads quickly via underground rhizomes. Can take over an area if not controlled.
